Masters in Physiotherapy with Specialisation in Behavioural Medicine, Malardalen University


The Masters degree programme in Physiotherapy with Specialisation in Behavioural Medicine offered by the Malarden University of Sweden will give you the tools to be able to evaluate and argue the case for applying behavioural medicine concepts, theories and models in physiotherapy.

This unique Masters degree course involves the physiotherapist learning about linking prescribing of physical activity with behavioural medicine oriented physiotherapy, and critical application of behavioural medicine theories and models in clinical patient and development work in physiotherapy.

Summary of Coursework


This 2-year programme is split in 2-halves; the first half consists of courses within the main field of study of Physiotherapy with specialisation
in Behavioural Medicine, and the other half of courses within the general area of Health and Social Welfare.

Year 1

Physiotherapy with specialisation in Behavioural Medicine:

  • Behavioural Medicine Applications in Physiotherapy, 7.5 credits
  • Adapt and Prescribe Physical Activity, 7.5 credits
  • Thesis on Advanced Level in Physiotherapy with a Behavioural Medicine Approach, 15 credits alternatively
  • Thesis on Advanced Level in Physiotherapy with a Behavioural Medicine Approach, Master, 30 credits

(You may choose to complete the degree project during year 1 or to continue the degree project during year 2.)

Health and Social Welfare:

  • Management, Teams and Organisations in Health and Social Welfare, 7.5 credits
  • Evidence-based Practice and Evaluation, 7.5 credits
  • Qualitative Research Methods I, 7.5 credits
  • Quantitative Research Methods I, 7.5 credits

Year 2

Physiotherapy with Specialisation in Behavioural Medicine:

  • Behavioural Medicine Applications in Physiotherapy, 7.5 credits
  • Development of Physiotherapy with Specialisation in Behavioural Medicine, 7.5 credits
  • Thesis on Advanced Level in Physiotherapy with a Behavioural Medicine Approach, Master, 15 credits or alternatively 30 credits

Health and Social Welfare:

  • Qualitative Research Methods II, 7.5 credits
  • Quantitative Research Methods II, 7.5 credits
  • Health and Welfare – Perspectives on Equity, Access and Participation, 7.5 credits
  • Health and Welfare – Perspectives on Profession, Organisation and Innovation, 7.5 credits

Program Choices:


On completion of year 1 you can apply for a 60-credit Degree of Master of Science in Physiotherapy with Specialization in Behavioural Medicine.
On completion of 2 years of the programme you should earn a Degree of 120- credit Degree of Master of Science in Physiotherapy with Specialization in Behavioural Medicine.

Having a 60-credit Masters degree in Physiotherapy with Specialization in Behavioural Medicine and fulfilling the specific entry requirements regarding knowledge of methodology, gives you the opportunity to go straight to the second year of the two-year programme directly.

Admission Requirements:


A completed bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to 180 credits within the fields of science of Physiotherapy or equivalent.


English Requirements:


International students are required to submit either
TOEFL – minimum score of 575 with a TWE score of at least 4.5 (PBT) or 90 with a TWE score of at least 20 (iBT) or a
IELTS test result with an overall band score of at least 6.5 and no band score below 5.5 or equivalent.

Tuition Fee:


67,500 SEK per Semester (6,500 Euro) OR
135,000 SEK per Year (13,100 Euro) OR
270,000 SEK for Full Programme (26,000 Euro)

Mälardalen University Scholarship Programme for Masters Students


Every year Mälardalen University offers a limited number of scholarships to students applying for a Masters programme with us as their first choice.

The scholarship will cover 100% of the tuition fee of the programme as long as you follow the normal study plan (minimum 22.5 credits/semester,
minimum 45 credits/academic year).

The scholarship does not cover living expenses.
